This season's back-to-basics

Posted by Admin

We are still surfing the summer wave of new sets here at New Elementary, but let's pause for a moment and look purely at parts today. I've trawled through Brickset's parts database to identify for you some of the more basic LEGO® parts that have been released in new colours this summer. Rather than name all the sets you can find these new elements in, I've added links instead - click the relevant Element ID.

Bricks

I already love the new 1X1X3 brick (Design ID 14716) and am not at all nostalgic about the olden days of stacking three 1X1 bricks neatly; I just wish I owned more of them! I also wish they were in every colour, but the good news is that they are now available in Black (Element ID 6065496) and Bright Light Yellow [BL]/Cool Yellow [TLG] (Element ID 6056360). The humble 1X2 brick (Design ID 3004) now comes in Light Aqua [BL]/Aqua [TLG] (Element ID 6022032) and Dark Brown (Element ID 6058257) whilst the transparent version with no interior pin (Design ID 3065) is available in Trans-Neon Green [BL]/Tr. Fl.Green [TLG] (Element ID 6081496). Not new, but only previously made from 1998-2000 is the very useful 1X12 brick in Tan [BL]/Brick Yellow [TLG] (Element ID 6075179 | Design ID 6112) so let's expect that the crazy second-hand prices for this element will soon come down.

Round bricks do well this summer. The 1X1 round brick comes in Metallic Silver [BL]/Silver Ink [TLG] (Element ID 6092106 | Design ID 18860) and Dark Orange (Element ID 6074890 | Design ID 3062). The 1X2X5 column (Design ID 43888) is in Dark Orange too (Element ID 6030306) and, as I failed to mention in my review of Trevi Fountain, it's finally in White also (Element ID 6073345). The 2X2 round brick comes in Trans-Orange [BL]/Tr. Br. Orange [TLG] (Element ID 6061560) in five sets across four themes. The 2X4X4 half-cylinder (Design ID 6218) now comes in Bright Light Orange [BL]/Fl. Yell-Ora [TLG] (Element ID 6082544) and good ol' Blue [BL]/Br. Blue [TLG] (Element ID 6073088), which will please Neo-Classic Space builders old and new.

Plates

Astro-Kitty delivers us very exciting 1X1 plates (Design ID 3024) in Pearl Gold [BL]/Warm Gold [TLG] (Element ID 6069887) and Yellowish Green [BL]/Spr. Yell. Gree [TLG] (Element ID 6069255) but don't let that distract you from other sets with welcome colours for this part: Lime [BL]/Br.Yel-Green [TLG] (Element ID 4621557) and Dark Green [BL]/Earth Green [TLG] (Element ID 6055169) and also Flame Yellowish-Orange (Element ID 6073040). More Flame Yellowish-Orange comes in the form of the 1X3 plate (Element ID 6073042 | Design ID 3623). For 1X4 plates we have Dark Orange (Element ID 6074892 | Design ID 3710) and 1X8 plates now come in Medium Azure (Element ID 6074793 | Design ID 3460). 1X12 plates only came in seven colours but now there's an eighth: Dark Red [BL]/New Dark Red [TLG] (Element ID 6072621 | Design ID 60479).

Moving on the wider ones now, we have the 2X4 plate in 2014's most exciting new colour for plates: Flesh [BL]/Nougat [TLG] (Element ID 6074312 | Design ID 3020) which is a great addition to this fledgling hue. 2X10 plates now come in Dark Tan [BL]/Sand Yellow [TLG] (Element ID 6079776 | Design ID 3832) and the 2X16 plate in Bright Light Blue [BL]/Lgh. Roy. Blue [TLG] (Element ID 6074915 | Design ID 4282). The 4X4 plate is new for Magenta [BL]/Br.Red-Viol [TLG] (Element ID 6074791 | Design ID 3031) and there's more Flesh fun with the 4X8 plate (Element ID 6074308 | Design ID 3035). The grand-daddy 16X16 plate is now in Medium Azure (Element ID 6022011 | Design ID 91405) which is great news for creating water. As a side note, I've noticed (and purchased!) handy 2X4 plates in Medium Azure on Pick-a Brick walls in UK Brand Stores at the moment, along with other Friends colours.

Tiles

1X1 tiles (Design ID 3070) now come in Flame Yellowish-Orange (Element ID 6065504) and Medium Azure (Element ID 4655243) and, as I've mentioned a few times: Trans-Clear [BL]/Transparent [TLG] (Element ID 6047501)! The 1X4 tile (Design ID 2431) appears in Magenta (Element ID 6078305) and Dark Orange (Element ID 6074893) and the 1X8 tile in Medium Azure (Element ID 6078339 | Design ID 4162). The exciting new corner tile gets its second colour: Light Bluish Gray [BL]/Med. St-Grey [TLG] (Element ID 6065824 | Design ID 14719).

There's plenty of additions to the rounds: 1X1 round tiles (Design ID 98138) now come in Trans-Purple [BL]/Tr. Kl.Bl.Vio [TLG] (Element ID 6065505), Lime (Element ID 6057878) and most exciting of all: Glow in Dark White [BL]/White Glow [TLG] (Element ID 6009088). The underside of the 2X2 round tile was redesigned last year and you can now get this new version (Design ID 14769) in Yellow [BL]/Br.Yel [TLG] (Element ID 6078279), Reddish Brown [BL] (Element ID 6075213), Black (Element ID 6070695), Dark Bluish Gray [BL]/Dk. St. Grey [TLG] (Element ID 6056296), Lime (Element ID 6092766), Bright Pink [BL]/Lgh. Purple [TLG] (Element ID 6092768) and Orange/Br.Orange [TLG] (Element ID 6092770). Don't they just look good enough to eat? Warning: choking hazard.

Modified

Finally let's look at some of the bricks, plates and tiles categorised as 'modified' that are very useful parts. The basic 1X1 SNOT brick finally arrives in Lime (Element ID 6073026 | Design ID 87087) and the 2X2 jumper comes in Magenta (Element ID 6056292 | Design ID 87580). The CMF stand - 3X4 plate with 4 studs - comes in Light Bluish Gray (Element ID 6079461 | Design ID 17836) whilst the 6X16 plate with 26 studs (Design ID 6205) comes in Blue (Element ID 6072638) and Magenta (Element ID 6077779). To finish, I can't resist including my favourite part, the 1X2 grille tile (Design ID 2412) which now comes in Olive Green (Element ID 6071200).

So those are the basic parts I've noticed amongst the 2014 summer sets. Did I miss any that you're excited about?

Next time I do one of these posts I'll look at the new colours of slopes, bows and arches. And don't forget, if you're buying sets (or anything from Amazon!) you can give New Elementary a little support by following our affiliate links before purchasing:

  1. Lime SNOT was available in 4 sets in 2010/2011 but has a new Element ID this time around.

  2. Thanks for the article. I wish there were more frequent updates as the posts are always a good read and full of helpful information. However, regarding the 1x2 brick in Dark Brown, this is not a new piece. It was in last year's Hobbit set 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army (2 bricks) and in the 2011 Pirates of the Caribbean set 4195 Queen Anne's Revenge (12 bricks). Still quite rare though.

  3. Great to see Lime 1x1 plates resurface - those things were RARE.

    1. Indeed. I bought a small batch of them several years ago, figuring I might be able to make a partially-lime car someday. When I built Acer from Pixar's Cars 2, I used up every last lime 1x1 plate that I owned (except the two in my Monster Pod), and pulled them up on BL to restock...until I saw the prices. I mean, I've paid $1 each for 60 1x1 dark-purple plates before, but I think the lime ones were in the $2-3 range at that moment.

  4. Indeed, the lime 1x1 plate is not technically new, but it was very rare (only used in one small set of 2005)
However the dark orange column isn't new. I do not know why it is not listed on Brickset for these 2003~2004 sets: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=43888&colorID=68&in=A
Maybe a different element number? All are listed as the same part on Bricklink (and I have some of these columns since a few years: they match the current dark orange parts).
Thanks for the updates, I like to read your articles :)

    1. As long as a specific mold/color combination stays current, they seem to keep the element ID number alive. Once it goes out of production long enough for them to stop stocking it, the next time it goes into production it'll usually have a new element ID. I once looked through the Brickset element ID list and found some elements had three or more numbers associated with them. 2004 is long enough ago that any backstock probably got purged at least five years ago.

  5. OK, seems I've not been so thorough with my cross-checking on BL! Maybe 51 elements was a bit ambitious :D Thanks for clarifying, everyone.

  6. Ah, Dark Orange 1x4 tile, how I have long awaited your re-release! This was in a few buckets from 2003-4 and most notably the UCS Yoda. I could use LOADS of these for my 1:1000 scale Portland. Looks like I'll be making a Bricks & Pieces order soon.

  7. So, my new 2x2 round tile in Red from 41514 Jawg isn't new for the summer? Weird.

    Great article as usual, Caperberry!

  8. Too bad the 1 x 1 plate in lime is only in a big exclusive set (and that set only contains a small number. I own the only other set to contain that part in line green and would love a bunch more than the 2 I already have. Lets hope it shows up in something smaller and easier to get :)

  9. I believe the 1x1 snot brick in lime has been seen before; I recall an Alien Conquest set or two that included them. Thanks for the inside look at all these pieces!

  10. I've just ordered a bunch of lime 1x1's from Lego's Replacement Parts. More expensive than other 1x1 plates at 11p (Green is only 5p), but better than nothing. The price differential makes me think we won't see them cheaply on BrickLink or on PaB walls in a hurry.

  11. Speaking of colors, I see on Bricklink that there never seems to have been a substantial production of Reddish Orange. Basically, all of the other tertiary colors seems to have been used for standard bricks (although teal/ turquoise currently is phased out.), but for some reason, Reddish Orange doesn't appear to have been an option...

  12. I believe Flame Yellowish Orange (aka Bright Light Orange on BL, IIRC) 1x1 square tile was used in the Minecraft set The Nether, as I have those and an extra.
