2019 LEGO® Speed Champions Part 2: the new elements

Posted by Admin
Following his review of the five new LEGO® Speed Champions sets for 2019, Ben Davies (ProfessorBrickkeeper) now examines the new, recolored and printed parts you'll find in them. 75890 Ferrari F40 Competizione, 75891 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Race Car, 75892 McLaren Senna, 75893 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T, and 75894 1967 Mini Cooper S Rally and 2018 MINI John Cooper Works Buggy are all now available to purchase.

Across the new assortment of Speed Champions sets, a whopping twenty-two new elements can be found. These include twelve part recolors, eight parts with new decorations, and two completely new part designs. After taking a look at the complete sets in part one of my review, I am turning my attention to all of these new elements, and highlighting some of the more notable ones.

Two new part designs for the purpose of vehicle building have been introduced in the the latest wave of Speed Champions. These include a slim new wheel arch and a hubcap element which extends to cover the edge of the tire.

New parts in 2019 LEGO Speed Champions

Introduced in 75894, the new wheel arch design (Design ID 49097) is the latest addition to a growing number of parts intended for vehicle building. Including the section of the arch which sticks out, the part is approximately two-and-a-half studs deep, three studs wide, and four plates high, with four studs on top and two anti-studs on the bottom.

While it currently appears exclusively in 75894 as the wheel arch for the 1967 Mini Cooper S Rally, I could easily see it being used for a variety of purposes, such as window arch detailing, thanks to how slim the piece is.

Appearing decorated in 75891, and undecorated in 75893, a new hubcap design (Design ID 49098) has been introduced, which inserts into the wheel and covers the outer-edge of the tire. The only apparent connection point the part features features is a single anti-stud on the back side. While the uses for the part initially seem rather limited, the anti-stud on the back allows it to be easily integrated into MOCs, where it could feasibly be used as a turbine or greebling.

Recolored parts in 2019 LEGO Speed Champions

A number of new recolored elements are also included in the new sets. The most notable brick to receive a recolor is Vehicle, Mudguard 4 x 2 ½ x 2 ⅓ with Arch Round, Solid Studs and Rounded Legs (35789), which was introduced in 2018 with four colors. In 2019 this expands to seven, with three additional colors:
  • Black (Element ID 6252537) in set 75893 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T
  • Bright Yellow [TLG]/Yellow [BL] (6252538) in set 75893 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T
  • Dark Stone Grey [TLG]/Dark Bluish Grey [BL] (6252543) in set 75892 McLaren Senna
Several other designs are introduced in new colors:

  • Tile, Modified 3 x 4 with 4 Studs in Center in Bright Red [TLG]/Red [BL] (6250570 | 88646);
  • Brick, Modified 1 x 2 x 1 No Studs, Curved Top in Bright Red [TLG]/Red [BL] (6252037 | 37352)
  • Tile, Modified 2 x 2 with Studs on Edge in Bright Blue [TLG]/Blue [BL] (6252060 | 33909)
  • Bracket 3 x 2 x 1 1/3 in Black (6253144 | 18671)
  • Slope 45 2 x 1 with Cutout without Stud in Bright Yellow [TLG]/Yellow [BL] (6228597 | 28192)
  • Minifigure, Weapon Spear Tip in Transparent Red [TLG]/Trans-Red [BL] (6251187 | 27257)
  • Minifigure, Utensil Cleaver in Black (6153591 | 98369)
  • Wheel 18mm D. x 12mm with Axle Hole and Stud in Bright Orange [TLG]/Orange [BL] (6251109 | 18976)
  • Slope, Curved 2 x 2 Inverted in Earth Green [TLG]/Dark Green [BL] (6255896 | 32803)

Printed parts in 2019 LEGO Speed Champions

While the Speed Champions line is rather infamous among AFOLs for its reliance on stickers (though I have ignored them for this review, where the focus is on parts), the new wave of sets introduces several new decorated elements which may be of use to builders.

Perhaps the most exciting new decorated part is the Plate 1x1 with plain red printing on one side in Black (6253609 | 3024). I could imagine this being particularly useful for capturing intricate details while building custom BrickHeadz or microscale models.

Other notable new decorated parts for builders include a Flat Tile 1x1 ½ Circle with red and white printed striped tail lights in Black (6256887 | 24246), and a Windscreen 36 Deg. 3x4x1 1/3 with printed red windscreen pillars in Transparent Brown [TLG]/ Trans-Black [BL] (6256908 | 35243).

While their use is somewhat diminished by their prominent branding, several other new decorated elements are also introduced across the range. These include:

  • Tile 1 x 1 with the R/T logo in Black (6256883 | 3070)
  • Plate 1 x 1 with the Ferrari logo on one side in Bright Red (6253610 | 3024)
  • Plate 1 x 3 with “CHEVROLET” printed on one side in Bright Blue (6253639 | 3623)
  • Plate w. Bow 3 x 4 x 2/3 w. Knobs with “MINI” printing in Bright Red (6256906 | 93604).
  • Hubcap element printed with yellow “CHEVROLET CAMARO” text in Black (6253654 | 49098)

  2. What's the diameter of the new hubcap? Would it fit inside the curve of an existing arch brick?

    1. Ben says, “Approximately 22mm - just under three studs. It doesn’t fit snugly into the curve of any existing arch brick, but fits nicely into one of the older wheel arch elements. (Design 50745)”

  3. Also of note 75891 appears to have 2 1x4 bows in blue. These are not new but are deffinitly an uncommon part.

  4. Finally 33909 in blue. I've been hoping for that.

  5. Can you share a photo of the underside of the new wheel arch? Unless I'm seeing the mini model wrong, It seems like it must have a little extra clearance to not rub on the tire.
