What new LEGO® pieces were released in October & November 2020?

With things relatively quiet on the new sets front recently, we skipped last month's list so here is a two-month bumper edition of the newest LEGO® parts. Toby Mac (on Rebrickable) has created this list showing them all with links to which sets they come in, so you can easily check for the ones you might be interested in. 

There are all the new teal parts from the new Mindstorms 51515 Robot Inventor (LEGO.com affiliate link; New Elementary earn from qualifying purchases) and 21324 123 Sesame Street with its opalescent globe. Interestingly, Tobias noticed when he imported the LEGO inventory that four printed pieces are different to what actually comes in the Sesame Street set presently.

It seems LEGO are changing the designs of several printed parts at the moment (we discussed another example on our Patreon recently) so you might receive the old designs or the new ones. In Sesame Street, the elements in question are the 1x1 square tile with gauge (6329584|73778), 1x4 tile with wood and nails (6329605|73797), 1x1 milk carton brick (6329591|73783) and the 1x1 round tile with "5"  (6329604|73794). It will be nice to have these new versions to mix in with the old in our MOCs, especially the wood print.

    Wow. I'm honestly sad that they are replacing those control console prints. I loved that 1x1 gauge piece more than I realized. Same goes for the 1x2 joystick print element.

    I just built Sesame Street, my copy came with all the old prints. I'm trying to decide if I should contact LEGO CS and request the new prints. It's not a big deal, and I don't really need the new parts. I'd still like to have the though. I may just fill out the set survey and mention that it was disappointing not to get the promised new prints.

      I am fairly certain CS won't be able to help, because the warehouse will have no way to distinguish between the old and new versions. They may well send you out a replacement but may well just be the old one again. Same as when a mould gets updated... the old ones generally get used up first.

      There was an infamous error in the Back to the Future set where the flux capacitor had a spelling mistake on it. Even with an error like that - along with promises to make it right - TLG could not get a corrected tile out to all who asked, it was pure chance if you got the corrected version!

      By the way, I'm not sure we can describe these prints as being "promised"...

      I said "promised" simply because the parts are shown to be in the set in the online inventory. Looking back at the printed instructions I see that they show the old prints. This leads me to believe the new prints were not really intended for the set.
      No one I know personally found any of this interesting. It is a tremendous gift to have someone to discuss LEGO parts with. Thanks for all you do here.
      Out of curiosity I put one of the new nickels (which cost 14¢) into an order from B&P, I can comment here in 10-20 days about what I actually receive.

      I ran into this problem with the first Harley Quinn minifig from the final wave of the Batman theme in 2008. They mixed up the order of the black and white print layers, resulting in half of each waistline curve and one of her breast curves being covered up in black. When I called to report it, they told me that they were already aware of the issue, and that _if_ they did another run of the parts, they'd correct it going forward. I asked about getting a replacement, and I was told that if I requested one, I'd get whatever happened to be in stock at the moment, and that it would count as my free replacement. Basically, I was advised to wait (which I did) and call for a replacement after they'd had some time to use up the existing stock and run another batch (which I forgot to do). I was eventually able to track down someone years later on Bricklink who was willing to check his inventory, and said he had three of each. I bought all three of the corrected prints, since I already had three of the misprints.

      And that is really the easiest way to deal with this if it's that big of an issue for anyone. Wait a bit, keep an eye on Bricklink to see when someone lists the updated version, and contact the store before placing an order. Yes, it'll cost a bit compared to getting free ones from consumer affairs, but Bricklink sellers might even be willing to take a photo of the exact pieces you'd be receiving before you commit to buying them.

      I finally received the bricks and pieces order. LEGO sent me the new nickel print. It took so long for it to show up that most of my excitement over the change wore off. There is one interesting characteristic to it, when viewed from an angle the tile appears blank. It's like a computer monitor with a privacy screen- I can only see the 5 if looking at it straight on.
      Now I'm going to work on remembering what I was planning to do with these parts I bought.

    The nickel and milk carton changes make sense to me—they had always seemed a bit of an oddity since they were introduced for the Friends theme (and thus had a little more of that curvy, elegant design language than your typical "generic" print). The new nickel in particular reminds me of the simple designs of the old chrome coin pieces. Would be neat if we ever finally got a copper penny to go with it...

    The gauge pattern I'm less sure of... there's nothing immediately wrong with the new one, but it's certainly a dramatic change to such a long-lived print, and the reasoning for it isn't immediately clear. As for the wooden board print, that one is so subtle as to be negligible, and in fact the old and new versions will probably work well together to add variety if anything.

    You didn't include 6329662 in your comparison but it also seems to me like it might be intended as a replacement, albeit a less direct one—the details on it evoke 4221879, a print that has been with us since the Rock Raiders theme! The main difference, apart from some of the minor details, is that that part was originally Dark Gray and later Dark Stone Grey, whereas the new version seems to be Medium Stone Grey. The color change is probably good for people who prefer consistency when using multiple different control panels in a MOC together but less good for people who prefer to choose their control method based more on the color of the tile underneath, for whom the variety was probably preferable.

      Excellent point about the Friends designs. People are commenting 'these look too Duplo to me' and I guess that's why; a downgrade in detail.

      Besides the fact that they upgraded the 1x1 tile with one that's 10% larger (yeah, I know, it's a really weird thing to notice), they've got graphic designers who need work to justify getting a paycheck. If the printing pads are wearing out, there's minimal cost difference between cutting a new set for the old design, or the first set for a new design. Things have advanced to the point where they can probably just plug the different layers for the new print into the computer of whatever machine produces their printing pads and it'll calculate how to make it happen without any manual input.

      The joystick tile you mention is covered in the Patreon article Tim mentioned (without being logged in to an account, you can see just enough to confirm this). The old joystick tile has been in production long enough that there's not exactly a shortage of supply, so anyone who really wants the old version should have no trouble acquiring some. I honestly can't figure out your last sentence, though. The two groups you mention sound the same to me. Now, as someone who does like to keep the tile color consistent where possible, this actually creates variety that works in my favor. Where before I could use the joystick tile with other dark-grey/dark-bley options, now I've got a similar design that I can use with light-bley designs. The new version will take a while to become easily obtainable, but once it does it won't be a big deal to set up an entire panel (like you might find in a utility plant where you need to control many instances of the same function from a single room) of either design.

    It's surprising that the Duplo Emmet and Lucy figures got flagged as new elements, since they came in set 10895 which was released in 2018 and retired this spring.

    My Sesame St. set also came with the original printed pieces and not the new designs. Curious what the ratio is for early buyers in terms of who got the new vs. the replaced designs.
