Contest: Make a Wishbrick

Posted by Admin

It’s contest time! Did you know that there are more than 3700 unique LEGO® elements in the official LEGO inventory? That’s a big selection, but do you ever feel that it’s just not enough?

Banner illustration for New Elementary's "Make a Wishbrick" contest showing a minifigure dreaming of a LEGO brick.

We’d love to see what new original part you could dream up, and to make this contest more challenging, we’re getting a bit meta: we want to see your dream element built out of LEGO bricks.

Thanks to support from the LEGO Group, you could win a Sanctum Sanctorum or Galaxy Explorer!

Your element can be functionally useful, or purely for aesthetics. It can be any kind of LEGO element – a Technic connector, a minifig accessory, hey why not a DUPLO goat? Just dream up the 'wishbrick' you want to see LEGO produce someday – and then build it!

Your entry can be as big or as small you like, and you can build with real bricks or digital software. Be sure to only use existing, unmodified LEGO elements in your construction. It is preferable that it is possible to legally build it, i.e. avoid floating connections in your digital builds, but that is a minor point compared to the importance of the innovative brick concept itself!

A 1x1 brick with various different connectors on its 4 sides: a vertical bar, a towball, a vertical clip and a horizontal clip. This brick is huge and built out of LEGO bricks.

New Elementary's Thomas Jenkins built this tongue-in-cheek example for you. His tip is to start by thinking about how you will build the smallest details of the element, which in this case were the connectors like clip, bar and stud. If you are in need of more inspiration for building an element out of LEGO elements, take a look at this MOC from Tom Loftus to see what we mean.

We have also published the gallery of all entries received to date! Check it out.

Judges will be looking for imagination and creativity in your wishbrick ideas, and the quality of your building will also play a smaller part. We can’t wait to see what you can come up with!

Win LEGO® prizes

We have 4 great prizes that you could win!

1 first prize of LEGO Marvel Sanctum Sanctorum (set 76218) and 3 runner-up prizes of LEGO Galaxy Explorer (10497).

Please note prizes are being sent by the LEGO Group, who cannot ship prizes to mainland China and cannot ship prizes to PO Boxes anywhere in the world. In the event that a prize is not available in the country of a winning entrant at the time of fulfilment, we reserve the right to provide another LEGO product of similar or greater value. No cash alternative is available.

How to enter this competition

  • You must be over 18
  • You can build with real LEGO bricks or digital LEGO bricks
  • You will need to provide image/s of your entry and also describe it
  • You may enter as many times as you wish (but please don't spam the judges with loads of similar entries!)
  • Entries close Tuesday 23 August 2022 11.59pm UTC.

Good luck!

  1. I love it, very excited to try my hand at this! The requirement to build it out of existing elements adds some difficulty, especially for my ideas involving compound curves or triple rounded corners.

    1. Yay! Glad you are keen. As mentioned, the building technique is a lesser consideration - the judges will allot more weight to your ideas.

  2. Now this is a good contest idea. I've had a brick type in mind that I've wanted forever. A 1 axle version of Technic, Axle Connector Hub with 3 Axles

  3. Question must it be made from actual elements. And not just a photoshop of 2 parts to make a new part?

    1. It has to be a large3r scale design of the part you want like in the example pics provided.

    2. Good to know. I submitted a 3x3 build for my part. As that's the scale it would work to show.
I do hope floating pieces are allowed. As there aren't any pizza plates. And I needed pizza tiles to convey an axle hole.

    3. I also wonder about "floating" pieces, or if they all need to be attached (legally or otherwise)

    4. Wow you people are entering already? I love it! Yes, Xenoterrans was correct. I'll get back to you on floating pieces... I feel it is ok but will run past the team

    5. Any update on floating pieces?

    6. Oh sorry I thought I had updated! Oops. Yes we would prefer everything to be buildable. Obviously the focus is on originality of the idea, but actually being buildable will be a consideration. We won't punish entries received up until now though! Thanks for the reminder...

    7. And just to clarify since I now realize this was asked in a perhaps vague way, does this definition of "floating" include pieces that are placed up against other pieces in a way that physically/geometrically fits but have no connection to hold them in place? Essentially, do all the constituent pieces need to be connected or held together, either by stud/pin/axle connection or by being locked in place by surrounding bricks?

    8. (as opposed to like "ooOOooOoo this piece is hanging in the air ooo spooOooky")

    9. It should be buildable in the real world without falling to the ground... if that helps?

    10. Glad to hear my entry won't be punished. But I probably should try and upscale my design with a more possible build.

  4. I'm very excited about this contest. Must come up with something really useful, like a Znap to Galidor connector or a Quattro brick separator.

    1. :D Well the judges are looking for imaginative, creative concepts!!

  5. Hm... will have to think on this. There's a couple of ideas I've had but the ones that come to mind are rather basic (like a 1x1 plate with two vertical clips instead of one), so I might have to rack my brain for something with a little more wow factor.

  6. My dream part is a bar 2L - I don't think a MOC of that would be very interesting

  8. I LOVE the entries so far! It is a little bittersweet that my favorite entry isn't my own...but wow! So many good ideas!

  9. There are so many good ideas in the contest already. I love the inverted cheese slope. The one interesting thing for me is that there is store on Aliexpress that sells a lot of these ideas. Has this contest been done before, and ideas are being made into knockoff parts?

  10. The (V2) Anti-Aliasing AA Roof Tile is a great idea. It is a really good fix for the current roof design.
