We are already a few months into the Year of the Rabbit, so are overdue to have a look at what sets 80110 Lunar New Year Display and 80111 Lunar New Year Parade have to offer. Both sets launched end of December 2022 and won’t be available for longer than a year, so let’s get creative with them - but first, I'll see what unique elements they include.

New parts in LEGO 80110 Lunar New Year Display
80110 Lunar New Year Display is an unusual set in that its focus is entirely decorative. Many of its 872 pieces are rather basic, to make the square shapes, but a closer look reveals a few recolours and some specially decorated bricks.
New recolours
Easy to miss on first sight is the whopping amount of tiles in Gold Ink/ Metallic Gold that are used for the two models: 109 in total, including 48x Tile Special 1 x 2 Grille (6347432 | 78812) coming for the first time in Gold Ink/ Metallic Gold.
You might think Brick Yellow/ Tan Dish 6 x 6 Inverted (6396012 | 44375) is something we had in a set before, but it’s actually its first time in this colour. Same with the 3x Flame Yellowish Orange/ Bright Light Orange Plate Special 4 x 4 with Curved Cutout (6430391 | 35044).
New decorated parts
Among the new prints in the Lunar New Year Display are 2x Butterflies (6420457 | 101531) in Cool Yellow/ Bright Light Yellow, which reappeared in the 21338 A-Frame Cabin in February.
More specific are the 8x Tile Round 3 x 3 with different traditional Lunar New Year words in Mandarin, which are accompanied by 2x Tile 2 x 4 representing the traditional red envelopes.

New parts in LEGO 80111 Lunar New Year Parade
With 1653 pieces, 80111 Lunar New Year Parade is the bigger model and aims at the fans of minifigures and playsets. For £89.99 / $129.99 / 99.99€ you get a parade with three different wagons.
Minifigures
The minifigures are some of the most interesting bits in the Lunar New Year Parade, for sure. Next to a long-awaited spaceman outfit, that we show you later, there is a big head mould, that might be new to many builders.
What looks like a new mould is actually Thanos' head from LEGO Marvel 76192 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle, which came out in 2021 and featured this big head in Medium Lavender. This is only the second set to use the upscaled head, and introduces two in Light Purple/ Bright Pink. Both are printed, with the face of the Boy (6420438) and the Girl (6420440).
The big head is 4 plates high and has a diameter of 2 modules.
Connectivity is given by an open stud on top and a tube at the bottom. It fits on a stud, a torso and also a LEGO Technic axle.
The printing slightly hinders the possibilities to use the big head. Those who dislike the colour might be interested in the upcoming LEGO® Dreamzzz sets, where it comes in Black in sets 71458 and 71461, but again printed. As announced recently, the head will return for Thanos this summer in LEGO Marvel set 76266.
Other interesting minifigure parts in this set are the aforementioned Classic Space astronaut elements in Medium Lilac/ Dark Purple. With the Helmet (6417692), the Air Tank (6417691) and a Space Creature from LEGO Minifigures Series 22, it is now possible to make a fully purple astronaut!

A few pieces get a recolour in the Lunar New Year Parade:

New decorated parts
In terms of decorated elements, the Lunar New Year Parade has plenty to offer.

The green tiles are especially interesting for fans of LEGO® Monkie Kid 80036 City of Lanterns, as the scales in that set are just stickers.
Stickers
Talking of stickers, the Lunar New Year Parade also comes with a sheet that might be useful for creating upscaled LEGO bricks, as it features nine of the embossed LEGO logos, to fit Tile 2 x 2 Round.
Jonas Kramm's creations
Having all the bricks of this Lunar New Year duo laying on my desk inspired me to play around with the interesting new pieces.
The seed part for the first alternative build was the Light Purple/ Bright Pink Clam, which was already used in a creative way in the actual set to make a flower. I turned the blossom into a dress and quickly a princess was born.
The cloud, which originally started as an element in LEGO® Unikitty, now comes in Bright Light Yellow, what reminded me of melting cheese.
Quickly, a burger and some fries were ready to get served. However, the burger turned out a bit flat, as I only had the 6x6 Dish in Tan available.
Finding a usage for the big head caused me quite a big headache. Mostly because of the Light Purple/ Bright Pink colour, which eventually led to the idea to make it a rubber at the end of a pencil.
To make it the typical yellow pencil, I had to use some extra bricks from my collection, though.
Closing thoughts
Both 80110 Lunar New Year Display and 80111 Lunar New Year Parade come with some interesting new pieces, but don’t strike me as perfect parts packs overall.
I’m intrigued to see where the journey of the big head leads. In more desaturated colours and without printing, the piece could make interesting columns or turbines.

ReplyDeleteThe "bigfig head" is such an interesting piece that I'm glad is still seeing use, even if it's only shown up on one bigfig character so far! I'm hoping that it both sees more use on bigfigs (perhaps with the introduction of appropriately-sized hair or headgear) and potentially sees more use for non-fig purposes (its 2x2 size is great and has all sorts of potential).
But why, WHY hasn't the purple air tanks and helmet shown up in bricks and pieces yet. Been checking in regularly for those but coming up empty each time.

Yes, the air tanks should have been available by now on PaB. Not all LNY-parts have shown up there in the past, so I fear they might not, but will check regularly.

DeleteAny 2x2 round piece has me thinking of use as wheels, wrapped in any of several rubber tires that would fit. Their particular shape with rounded ends (but nota spherical dome) would also be good for propane gas tanks as used by many American backyard bbq grills. Snowman torso, Stay-Puft marshmallow man also come to mind.
