At long last, following the success of the LEGO® Fortnite video game, construction sets have been officially announced... and they're hilarious!
Coming 1 October 2024, the 77070 Durrr Burger, 77071 Supply Llama, 77072 Peely Bone and 77073 Battle Bus are jumping onto your actual desk top.

Let's take a look at each in turn, and spot some of the new parts coming in them.
LEGO Fortnite Durrr Burger set
This 193-piece set is intended for builders aged 9+ and features the iconic mascot from the restuarant chain of the same name within LEGO Fortnite.
It doesn't seem to do anything, which I guess is appropriate for what is clearly intended to be a brainless snack, but absolutely oozes personality with its long tongue, bulging eyes and olive toothpick lobotomising its innards.
Recolours
At first we naturally assumed the colour of the bun must be Dark Orange or one of the Nougats, but our best guess is that it is just good ol' Orange.

LEGO Fortnite Supply Llama set
This 691-piece set, aimed at builders aged 12+, contains the stubby sentient piñata and some of the accessories it regularly dispenses. I am informed these are a Grappler, Slurp Juice, Rough Ruby, Backpack, Good Luck Charm, Slap Juice and Dynamite.
As you would expect, the interior has a hollow cavity. It can be packed with the accessories via a hinged flap at the top, and they fall from the side when released.
Recolours
The most noticeable new element is the surprised eye print, which will be very useful for all sorts of things.
We noticed some recoloured parts too though:
- Tile Round 1 x 1 with Hollow Bar (20482) in Lavender
- Slope 45° 2 x 2 Double (3043) in Medium Lavender
- Plate Special 1 x 1 Rounded with Handle (26047) in Medium Lavender

- 1x2 plate with wide handle (48336) in Medium Lavender on the lower jaw
- 2x2x2/3 inverted curved slope (32803) in Medium Lavender on the back of the head
And although it's not a new element, we're really happy to see Slope 30° 1 x 1 x 2/3 (Cheese Slope 54200) in Medium Lavender again, because they were only in 3 sets in 2018/2019 in small quantities, and aren't on Pick a Brick.
Similarly, 1x2 - 2x2 downward bracket (44728) in Medium Lavender on the head has previously only been in LEGO Friends 3187 Butterfly Beauty Shop from 2012.

LEGO Fortnite Peely Bone set
Peely Bone is an outfit (or skin) within the game, and who wouldn't want to look like this? (If you don't want to look this appealing, I have a bone to pick with you.)
However, the press release explains that this model, aimed at the 18+ market, is not based upon the in-game version but rather the collectible, which features moveable, swole arms.
His accessories are a Peely Pick Pickaxe, a detailed Paint Launcher and Banana Bag Back Bling.

- 2x2 curved corner plate with 1x1 cutout (79491) in White on the right foot
- connector with axle hole and male click hinge (53923) in White on the right foot
- connector with male and female click hinge and Ø3.18 hole (54662) in White on the right foot
- 2x2 tile with two quarter-circle cutouts (3396) in Reddish Brown on the left foot
- 2x4 round tile (66857) in Yellow on the left leg
- 2x6 wedge plates (78443 & 78444) in Yellow
- 1x2 plate with angled triple handle (92692) in Yellow on the left hand
We are pleased to see the Banana Bunch (3566) mould return, having only appeared in two LEGO® Super Mario™ Donkey Kong sets last year. If you haven't stocked up on this as well as the new Banana Peel (5215) mould, both are currently available on Pick a Brick.
Even rarer is the telephone receiver in Yellow (6272114 | 6190) spotted on Peely's heel(y), previously only in set 75810 Stranger Things from 2019.

LEGO Fortnite Battle Bus set
The Battle Bus is a flying vehicle that transports Fortnite players to an island to fight. It is yet to appear in LEGO Fortnite, but that is about to change apparently!
The 954-piece set comprises the Battle Bus model with accessories Slurp Juice, Grappler, Pickaxes and Slap Juice. The bus has a removable roof, so that you can place the minifigures – yes, all 9 of them – within.
The 9 minifigures included in set 77073 are Battalion Brawler, Adventure Peely, Brite Bomber, Cuddle Team Leader, Cube Assassin, Trespasser Elite, Drift, Meowscles and Raven:

Conclusion
This is an unusual and interesting range of products. The youngest age groups are offered a small and a large model, and only one of the four sets includes minifigures. The rest are "objects", and are really display models more than play sets, with few functions on offer.
However there is no doubt these will fly off the shelves, and not just thanks to Fortnite fans – even I am tempted to pick up the three adorable characters! They ooze personality and animation, even if you are unfamiliar with the game.
Having 9 desirable minifigures in one set is a joy, and a curse to those who cannot afford the set they come in. It's especially painful that the banana and the bus are the same price around the world, except in Australia where the bus is $20 more expensive!

The only main issue with yet another minor videogame tie in theme is all the printed parts and minifig parts are likely not going to make it to PaB, does make it a bit frustrating but at least the bus is mostly affordable for one set of the minifig bits and the bus can be altered to fit a city theme.
ReplyDeleteAlso I absolutely hate the banana skin with skeleton...thing. Just...why? haha. I'd have thought a minifig sized battle area would have made more sense for a first wave.
Wouldn't call Fortnite a "minor" tie in theme by any stretch—love it or hate it, it's one of the most popular and successful video games out there these days.
DeleteI use "minor" as in quantity of sets/amount of parts not the popularity (I'd consider LotR also "minor" but it's got 2x £400 sets and is one of the most well known things on the planet!). It's just frustrating since there are usually a lot of good torso/printed parts which are solely tied down to expensive sets. It has been noted very explicitly that Lego has a licence agreement with these parties to never release the copyrighted designs they are reproducing outside of the given sets (which is why Star Wars or Harry Potter prints are never available on PaB either). It saves Lego I guess a lot of money ie makes the sets affordable to produce in the first place.
DeleteThe win is having new colours/element designs which find their way into other sets or possibly PaB, and some generic minifig parts like hairs sometimes make it.
We're mostly lucky a lot of Ideas sets are unbranded, the Modular line is continuing well and City/Ninjago/Friends is strong and Lego at least experiment with Dreamzz and Monkie Kid, since every additional tie in licenced theme locks those new bits up behind a very hefty price point (regardless of if you Bricklink individual parts it's not cheap!). At least you do get a hefty amount of minifigs on the bus in this instance, but it's still not a £30 set you can pick multiples of easily.
Some bat-ape minifigs there. Many of the parts seem to be useful for customizing.
ReplyDeleteAlong with the new 2x2 quarter dome, there is a new 1x2 slope brick, no? Otherwise I don't know what they're using that could match the curve of the dome.
ReplyDeleteThat's not much of a mystery actually—it's most likely the 1x3x2 arch with curved top (92903). The curve of the 2x2 quarter dome matches that just like the vertical curve of the 3x3x2 quarter dome (they're even used together on Peely's skull there), but unlike the 3x3x2 quarter dome the 2x2 one has the same curve in all three dimensions.

DeleteIs that bus constructed 7-wide? The 6-wide standard for official Lego trains will look a bit puny in comparison. Have Lego ever made 7-wide minifigure buses before or is this a first?

DeleteThe bus from the Hidden Side theme was also 8-wide (actually even wider when you add the large wheel arches). In general it's not that uncommon for vehicles in "action themes" to outscale your typical City vehicle, since they're designed more for play than to scale with average street layouts.

DeleteIn general, there are loads of vehicles outside the City theme that would be extremely oversized by City/Town standards to allow for more detail and playability (consider all the oversized cars, trucks, and motorcycles in themes like Agents, Ninjago, and Monkie Kid).
A larger scale like this is also not uncommon for licensed sets like Jurassic Park jeeps, Batmobiles, or Speed Champions sports cars, particularly since it helps to ensure they accurately reflect the details of a very specific vehicle design (whereas a City bus, tow truck, or race car just has to evoke the general idea of a bus, tow truck, or race car).
Unfortunately it looks like you only get the left hand train door in the set, not the right hand one.
ReplyDeleteThis was a worry of mine too, since the right-hand door is not visible in these photos, but the 360-degree spin video on LEGO.com shows that one is included on the right side of the bus!
