Review: 40691 Mythical Pegasus gift with purchase from LEGO® Creator

Posted by Tim Johnson

3 pictures showing white and blue lego animals on a gold plinth shaped like a column: a dragon, a bird and a winged horse.

What's better than a unicorn? A flying horse that transforms into a dragon and a bird! The current gift with purchase, running until 28 August 2024, is set 40691 Mythical Pegasus: a LEGO® Creator 3-in-1 set.

Elements of interest

The variety, colour scheme and usefulness of the parts in the inventory make for a great little building pack, as you would expect from a 3-in-1 model. I was especially pleased to find some useful pieces in decent quantities for a set this size: 8 rounded 1x3 plates in white, 12 double-curved 1x1x⅔ bricks in white, 8 of the matching 1x4 version in tan and 10 quarter-circle tiles in satin trans-blue.

With no recoloured pieces, and of course no new moulds as this is a LEGO Creator set, there are just a few rarer elements to alert you to.

3 different Lego pieces.
  • Brick Special 2 x 4 with 3 Axle Holes in Bright Light Blue (6460975 | 39789) has only appeared in 43232 Peter Pan & Wendy's Flight over London
  • Hinge Plate 1 x 2 Locking with 2 Fingers on Side, 7 Teeth in Light Aqua (6431335 | 50340) has only appeared in 2 other sets.
  • Brick Round 2 x 2 x 2 Robot Body - with Bottom Axle Holder x Shape + Orientation - Light Bluish Gray (6310181 | 30361) has only appeared in 3 other sets.

Plinth

lego model of a tan and golden plinth rising from a cloud.

Whichever animal you choose to build, they will sit on this grandiose plinth rising from a cloud. Just like the animals, this is really cute, sort of like a chibi column! Perhaps it is "really" a full height column but we only see the section above the cloud?

Lots of pearl gold and dark tan pieces make up the capital of the column, with some lovely patterns going on. I especially like the gold section "boxed in" by dark tan brackets.

The dark tan pieces on top of the plinth have been carefully chosen to guide the positioning of the feet of all three creatures, despite the dragon's being somewhat different to the others.

The tan column is pleasant to build. It looks great in cross-section. Axles go down the centre hole, anchoring the capital to the column.

Flying Horse

The primary model is called Mythical Pegasus, and a fine beast she is.

Highly poseable, her legs, tail and of course wings can be arranged as desired, and those chonky hoofs help her stay balanced.

Off the plinth, and no longer prancing, Pegasus just looks like she's auditioning for Titanic.

If you recognise this model, that's because she closely resembles set 31140 Magical Unicorn from last year!

Designer George Gilliatt describes the two as "long-lost sisters". Indeed much of their structure is the same, but of course Pegasus has a fine pair of wings. However, their alternate models are completely different: set 31140 could be turned into a seahorse or a peacock, while set 40691 transforms into.... Well, let's take a closer look.

Dragon

A little Lego dragon on a gold plinth

Like the plinth, this Mythical Dragon is quite squat; almost duck-like! I find that slightly odd but it is terribly cute, reminiscent of How to Train your Dragon, and it sports a wonderful tail and pair of nostrils.

Being so small, many parts are left over.

I'm glad they didn't try to cram in too many parts though – it would have affected this wonderful, mostly-white top view which almost looks like a dinosaur. Anything but cute!

Bird

The Mythical Bird is of unknown species, but hey that's myths for you. So enigmatic.

As I was nearing completion of the build, I feared it was going to be terribly gawky and unsatisfactory, especially all the exposed undersides of elements. However they works really well! Aside from the 2x2 light blue plate which really jars. Apart from that, the unusual textures all benefit the model I feel, although without the stand (above right) the rear does look like the bird is keeling over backwards.

The side view works really well too (again, in spite of the cubic head). It looks quite like a cockatoo from this angle.

A lot of pieces are left over from this model too.

Conclusion

As a gift with purchase, this is easy to recommend. All three are adorable display models, the parts are really useful, and the qualifying threshold is relatively low. Also, all types of purchases count – with the usual exception of Pick a Brick Standard orders. (Pick a Brick Bestseller are fine.)

You will certainly reach the threshold immediately if you pre-order just LEGO® The Legend of Zelda™ 77092 Great Deku Tree, which would then be sent on 1 September. Also available to pre-order are the LEGO® Wicked and LEGO® Fortnite October sets.

  1. I appreciate the images showing the leftover parts from the alternate builds. I always wonder about that with these 3-in-1 sets.
