60420 Yellow Construction Excavator is the smaller of the two construction-themed LEGO® City sets that were released in June 2024.
An obvious companion piece to 60409 Yellow Mobile Construction Crane which I recently reviewed, there are a number of recolours, prints and minifigure parts shared between both sets. Even so, the Excavator is a fine model in its own right, boasting its own selection of unique and interesting parts. Let's take a look.

Minifigures and side builds
The build
The completed model
- The boom isn't remote-operated but the actions are smooth, with a realistic range of motion.
- The treads roll impressively, without the cheater wheels present on other sets.
- Some downward pressure is required when turning the turret to prevent the whole thing sliding. It's a bit of a hindrance for easy 'scoop-rotate-dump' play but the friction is useful for drive mode.

Very interesting shapes and curvatures are on a back of excavator. I belive we may see results of recent shift of chief of speed champions desing to city division.
ReplyDeleteGreat review. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason this one really hit me with how much I would've loved it as a kid, specifically in how it has actual tracks. It was always a point of frustration for me to see a cool construction vehicle toy that had solid-molded tracks with cheap little wheels underneath; real, moving tracks were almost a luxury, but were a huge part of why I found the vehicles fascinating. This set has all the shaping and functionality of any good excavator toy and would've been a blast to sift through the bean tray with.
