Review : 76781 Wednesday & Enid's Dorm Room from LEGO® Wednesday

Posted by tobymac

We’re finishing off the LEGO® Wednesday sets with the title character's living quarters featured in 76781 Wednesday & Enid's Dorm Room. The tenants have very different styles and their dark meets colorful personalities are on display in their shared room. Let's find out if the clashing styles will result in a comprehensive build.

New molds

Gargoyle (LEGO part 5785)

Sitting on the balcony are four gargoyles. We’ve seen brick built versions of these creatures as well as gargoyle minifigures, but now there is a special mold for them coming in Light Bluish Grey (6492553 | 5785). The statue sits on a single stud but the full body has a 2 x 3 footprint. It's a perfect part to add some flavor to your buildings.

Dish 8 x 8 with Hing (LEGO part 5950)

The dorm features a large window that opens up to the balcony. The window is made out of a new dish spanning 8 x 8 studs with click hinge connections on the top. In this set the mold comes printed in Trans-Clear (6501595) showing the two styles of the dorm. Unfortunately, I have not spotted the mold in a plain version yet.

At the bottom we find stud notches, making it possible to place the dish on top of a studded surface. The hinges will collide though, so these need to stick out of a side.

Thing (LEGO part 5786)

Thing is a protective creature resembling a severed and scarred hand instructed to keep an eye on Wednesday during her stay at Nevermore Academy. The character comes with its own new mold, featuring a hand with an anti–stud connection at the bottom and a bar set at a 45 degree angle on top. The hand comes in light nougat with scars printed on (6501591).

The bar on top seems familiar; the placing and angle line up perfectly with the bar of the orange hermit crab (69945), although the crustacean’s bar is a bit longer. The top curve of the hand section shows the same curve and height as the 1x1 stadium brick (49307), but the lower sides curve inwards.

The bar and the anti-stud underneath the hand are the only connection points, as the inside curve of the hand is unfortunately too small to hold a bar. I’m certain this wasn’t an oversight by the element designers, so I’m curious as to the reason.

One reason could be that Thing is often depicted sitting on Wednesday’s shoulder or arm. The shoulder of the minidoll is a bit too wide, and the head gets in the way, but the arm gives a place to sit for Thing. There is little to no grip though, and he can only stay on thanks to the bent elbow providing a more stable underground. The anti-stud gives a much more convenient connection to the minidoll hand.

Rose (LEGO part 5904)

A very welcome new mold is rose in black (6500395 | 5904).  The flower is wider than the standard flower (24866, shown in magenta) and features 2 layers with 6 petals each. The hollow stud in the center can fit round plates (or flowers), and the small 1.5mm hole at the center fits on flower stems. We've spotted the same mold in different colors in other sets released in October. Note that the set only comes with 1 flower; I’ve added some additional ones from 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure to show them stacked.

Recolours

Enid has a couple of stuffed animals spread across her side of the dorm giving us a recolour for Animal, Rabbit / Bunny, Baby Sitting [Plain] in Dark Turquoise (6451959 | 18852), and a plain version for Animal, Hamster [PLAIN] in Bright Orange/ Orange (6478196 | 24183), which already exits in that color in a printed version.

  • 1x Wedge Plate 8 x 3, 8° Left in Black (6509581 | 3544)
  • 1x Wedge Plate 8 x 3, 8° Right in Black (6509580 | 3545)
  • 4x Tile Round 2 x 4 in Dark Bluish Gray (6506834 | 66857)

  • 2x Panel 2 x 2 x 1 Corner Posts with Centre Stud in Light Bluish Gray (6506831 | 3131)
  • 6x Arch Brick 1½  x 1½  Corner in Light Bluish Gray (6506830 | 38585) will be welcome to Castle builders. Its brother, the Arch Brick 1x2 'straight' (38583) first came in light bluish gray in 2023.

  • 1x Brick Round 2 x 2 Dome Top in Trans-Yellow (6414342 | 40258)
  • 4x Tassel with 1 x 1 Round Stud in White (6506832 | 25375)
  • 1x (plus spare) Plate Round 1 x 1 with Hollow Stud and Horizontal Bar 1L in White (6449593 | 32828)

Decorations

Aside from the minidolls, there are 2 newly decorated elements

  • 1x Tile 1 x 2 with Scribbles, Hyde print in Tan (6516365)
  • 1x Musical Instrument Double Bass with Silver Strings, Dark Bluish Grey Slots print is also a recolour in Black (65015920

All other decorations are handled by 2 sticker sheets.

Minidolls

We get 2 minidoll versions of both Wednesday and Enid in both of their regular outfits and their special outfits for the Rave’N ball. Their designs are spot on and represent the characters perfectly.

Going from left to right:

Wednesday’s regular outfit gives us a new molded hairpiece with her signature braided tails in Black (6492552 | 5784). Her Warm Tan head (6501583 or 6501573), Warm Tan torso (6515844) and Black dress (6515847) feature a new print.

In contrast to all the black, Enid’s regular outfit is much more colorful. Her hair is a recolour in Bright Light Yellow (6515849 | 2632), her Light Nougat head (6501577) and torso (6515855) and White skirt (6501581) are all a new print.

Reluctantly, Wednesday wears a special dress for the ball, with a return for Hair Braids Pulled Back to Bun with Holes on Top and Back in Black (6515850 | 24080). This rubber element was last seen in 2016, and I had expected it to be remade in a ABS version like most rubber hairpieces in the past few years. Her Warm Tan head (6501583 or 6501573), Warm Tan torso (6515852) and Black dress (6433584) feature a new print.

Enid goes to the ball in a sparkling outfit, with a recoloured hairpiece in Bright Pink (6516051 | 1879). Her Light Nougat head (6501585) and torso (6518150) and White skirt (6501589) are all a new print.

Rare elements

Brick 2 x 2 in Sand Blue (6506825 | 3003) has appeared in just 3 sets in 2003 and 2004.

Appearing in 1 or 2 sets prior to this release:

  • Plate Round Corner 5 x 5 with 4 x 4 Round Cutout in Lavender (6488200 | 80015)
  • Panel 2 x 2 x 1 Corner Posts with Centre Stud in Reddish Brown (6494116 | 3131) could almost count as a recolour
  • Arm Skeleton [Bent / 2 Clips] in Sand Yellow/ Dark Tan (6484017 | 93609)
  • Food Cupcake with Stud in Bright Yellowish Green/ Lime (6493230 | 79743)
  • Food Cupcake with Stud in Medium Stone Grey/ Light Bluish Gray (6465111 | 79743)
  • Headwear Accessory Cat Ears with Pin in Black (6445354 | 69903)

The build

The build starts with a sturdy frame that's covered in plates which directly show the different styles in the dorm.

The two sides of the dorm make for a varied build, with a lot of small assemblies and nice techniques. I especially like the use of the upside-down panel creating table legs for the gramophone player. A lot of details from the show can be found scattered around the room like the ears from the Black Cats and Enid’s earphones.

The most interesting part of the build for me is the construction of the angled roof. The largest sections on the corners are held in place by a bar-and-clip connection lining up the roof with the sloped bricks on the corners. The spire is more intricate with bars on technic connectors holding onto the axle hole in the Technic Plate 1 x 5. With a bit of fiddling, everything lines up nicely and the whole construction is hidden behind a murder board.

Underneath the frame is room for 2 drawers where the alternate version of the minidolls and their accessories for the ball can be stored.

The drawers are held in place by a click-hinge locking into a clip and can be released by the levers on the sides. I wonder why two colors of the BIONICLE eyes are used here, eating into the element budget.

Conclusion

I’m a big fan of the Wednesday series with its Gothic and macabre styling. This set is a good representation of that style while incorporating a lot of details from the show. The design on the minidolls is likewise incredibly well done. I don’t really have a preference for minifigs or minidolls, but for this set the minidolls feel the best fit, allowing for a more detailed and accurate design.

The set comes with a lot of interesting new molds and recolours, with my favorite being the gargoyles. Along with the recoloured Brick Special Arch 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 Corner in Light Bluish Gray they will provide new architectural options. I think we’ll see the new dish appear in other sets too as it makes a perfect TIE Fighter cockpit without studs getting in the way of the print in the center.

  1. Love that new windscreen piece! Historically it's often been hard to find "glass" to fit circular windows formed by the classic 1x5x4 arches and inverse arches (as are used in this set). This windscreen fits that niche phenomenally.

  2. Nice set and review. But I keep wondering how that lime macaroni tile is held up. Single stud?
