The build

completed lego model Monkie Kid 80058 Celestial Pagoda

The building techniques used are mostly straightforward. The pagoda's foundations are built in the first instance, which are hewn into some substantial rocks with jail cells in the basement. As we go further up the structure, there are instances of SNOT building with the round lattice fences being supported on their sides with a couple of 1x1 - 1x2 Inverted brackets.

The footprint of each successive floor gradually decreases to form the classic triangular silhouette of the structure. I really like the colour palette of lavender, dark blue, tan, pearl gold and bright light blue. It might not be to everyone's taste, but I think they harmonise very nicely.

Around the back the build exhibits the classic doll's house-style with open floors to allow easy access for play.

7 models of asian furniture made of lego pieces

I was pleased by the selection of small furniture builds which are dotted around the interior. They add a touch of Chinese class to the floors, and can be used as inspiration for your own furniture MOCs.

A couple of fun play features are lurking in the two main floors – one is a substantial ornate door set into the floor immediately above a perilous trapdoor in the floor below – an unwary visitor is easily catapulted into the vaults if they are not looking where their footing is taking them!

Mod of the set

The open backed nature of the structure is not really to my taste – I prefer my buildings to be fully enclosed. And I liked the look of the set so much that I put my hand in my pocket and bought a second copy, and added some pieces from my own collection to complete the transformation!

A modfied version of Monkie Kid 80058 Celestial Pagoda set. Two copies have been combined to make one fully enclosed building.

I decided to angle both sets of stairs at 90 degrees to the front door, providing an imposing dual staircase with a little pond below.

At the rear, I enclosed what would have been the other doorway, using some pieces I already had. I also mirror-built one of the foundation levels so that the rocks and flowing water appear on the same side for both halves.

The peach trees provided a nice finish to the rear corners, and the whole structure sits on a MILS plate for added stability. This is clad with several hundred tan ingots which I picked up from my local Pick A Brick wall a while ago. Some gold plates with bar complete a bit of fancy edging along the sides of the plinth.

For those of you not so keen on the original colour scheme, if you like the design it would be perfectly feasible to colour-swap the elements to provide a more traditional-looking Chinese building. I don't have enough pieces to do it all, but I mocked up this little corner window detail to show you what could be possible. I would love to see if anyone feels inclined to build the whole thing like this!

Conclusion

I was genuinely surprised by how tall the build ended up; all those different levels make for a very eye catchng finished build, and I do love the colours used. It's not often that I buy a second copy of any set, so the fact that I really wanted to "finish" this one off and complete the rear is an indication of how much I enjoyed its style and aesthetics.

With a price per part value of  7.7p/9.3c (US)/8.6c (EU) it is particularly good value for UK buyers, although perhaps a little less so for the EU and US markets. I still feel it would provide an imposing and stylish addition to any LEGO city builder's Chinatown or Ninjago districts, even if you don't go as far as to double it up to complete the rear half. There are plenty of interesting parts in quantity which should interest MOC builders too.

  1. Lovely review of a lovely set! I love what you've done combining two sets into a fully enclosed version!

  2. I haven't really followed the Monkie Kid lore. Are the heroes on a track and field team or something?

    1. The Celestial Pagoda is a prison for demons and other ne'er-do-wells, and in the current season of Monkie Kid, when the heroes end up going there to try to claim one of the five magical stones included in this set they're fitted with matching prison jumpsuits.

  3. Something viscerally satisfying about seeing the full tower mirrored and completed like that. Elevates it past a plaything and makes it feel like a place. I want to shrink down and go in there.

  4. This is my favorite New Elementary Monkey Kid review so far. The two-set merger is really impressive to see, and the experiment with the building corner in different colors is a great way to explore the interchangeability of elements and is a great twist on New Elementary's love for recolors.

  5. "Asian class" you can just say Chinese, Journey to the West is Chinese. Asia is a whole entire continent
