The tires have been warmed up, the lights are turning on one by one, and the grid is ready to speed off.
In March 2025, LEGO® Technic will release 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Car and 42207 Ferrari SF-24 F1 Car: two sets depicting large scale replicas of the cars that these two teams used in the 2024 F1 season. It’s a race to the finish line to see which brings the best new elements for us.

After 2024 brought space-themed sets spanning multiple themes, in 2025 LEGO has set aim at Formula 1, releasing sets featuring fast cars in themes like LEGO® City, LEGO® DUPLO®, LEGO® Speed Champions and even a LEGO® Minifigures series.
Of course LEGO Technic is present as well, adding two large-scale cars to the mix. The theme is no stranger to Formula 1, with set names bearing the word "F1" going back to 1994, and even a ‘generic’ car appearing in 1990's 8830 Rally 6-Wheeler as a B-model. Remember when LEGO Technic did those?
The first large-scale car was 8458 Silver Champion from 2000, coming in at 1433 parts and considered to be a highly desired collectible by fans. More recent are 2022's 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Team 2022 and 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance from 2024, both still in production as of writing, meaning we now have 4 similar-sized cars to pick from.
To the untrained eye, these cars can look very similar apart from the colors and stickers, so I’ll also be building the new additions side-by-side, to see how different the construction is. I’ll save that for another blog post, as first I will examine all the new elements these cars introduce.
New molds
LEGO Technic Panel Fairing 5 x 7, Inverted (parts 6606 & 6609)
- Technic Panel Fairing #42 5 x 7, Side A Inverted in Black (6508517 | 6609)
- Technic Panel Fairing #43 5 x 7, Side B Inverted in Black (6508514 | 6606)
As the names suggest, these panels are inverted versions of existing panels Technic Panel Fairing 5 x 7 #13 Side A and #14 Side B, shown above in red. Although they are the same size, there are some differences to point out. As you can see above, the top of the mold has a small, flat ridge, giving a slightly different curve.
The connection points are also different: the bottom still has a 5x2 L-shape with pin holes, but the sides have pin holes that are moved and rotated.
With the LEGO Technic panel line-up expanding constantly, I’m happy to see we are not just getting new sizes, but also seeing updates of existing sizes. There have been more inversions lately, with the 3 module-wide panels getting updates in 3 sizes in 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht.
LEGO Technic Panel Fairing 2 x 5 x 1 (part 7101)
Fully new is the 5 module-long addition to the 2-wide panel family. The mold appears 10 times in set 42206 and 6 times in set 42207 in black (6540723 | 7101), and can be found in further colors in other LEGO Technic sets from the March wave as well.
The panel has the same curvature as the other in the family. Where the 3 module-long version features an axle hole in the back, the 5-long version comes with 3 pin holes. This makes sense: with a single connection point, the 3-long version needs an axle to provide a rigid connection, while the 3 holes of the 5-long version provide enough points for a rigid connection. The sides still feature an axle hole to make sure panels placed adjacent line up nicely.
LEGO Technic Engine Cylinder, No Studs (part 6608) & Beam Special 1 x 5 x 3 (6614)
- 6x Technic Engine Cylinder, No Studs in Light Bluish Gray (6508516 | 6608) in both sets
The new version, shown above left, is a studless remake of the classic shown above right, while also losing the vents on the sides, resulting in a smoother look. Functionally, the mold stays the same: the outer dimensions are similar and the same pistons are used. So it’s not the total recall I hoped for, but for an update, this is welcome.
Despite the remake losing its traditional LEGO studs, it is not completely studless: the top features a large round edge, similar to the one found at the top of barrels, allowing for a 2x2 part to be attached with free rotation. It reminds me of the classic LEGO® Scala studs, included in the photo above in white.
The bottom has connectivity too, fitting on top of another cylinder with free rotation, fixed on a 2 x 2 studded area and on a LEGO Scala stud.
In the early days, brick-built solutions were used to hold cylinders together in a V-shape. In 2000, Technic Pin Connector Block 1 x 5 x 3 (3233, above right) was introduced as a bracket to provide a sturdy solution, lining the cylinders up with the axle holding the pistons.
This part has received an update as well, in the form of Beam Special 1 x 5 x 3 shown above left and centre, with one appearing in each set in Light Bluish Gray (6508522 | 6614).
Like the cylinder update, in functional terms Beam Special 1 x 5 x 3 is mostly identical to the old version, but it has lost all studs and anti-studs and gained a pin hole. The loss of studs results in less connection options, but with them no longer sticking out it is more space efficient, fitting in with modern LEGO Technic.
It is nice to see updated versions for these parts, but it is also bitter-sweet: as an '80s kid spending most of the '90s building LEGO Technic, it marks the loss of one the last ‘real’ studded LEGO Technic bits.
Wishbone 7 x 8 x 2 (part 5780)
Over the years, we’ve seen various ways to represent these rods and wishbones, and the new sets introduce several new molds for them, starting with Wishbone 7 x 8 x 2, appearing 8 times in Black (6509233 | 5780) in each set.
As the name suggests, the element spans an area of 7 x 8 modules, with a pinhole protrusion on top. At the wide side we find two pinholes, and the narrow side features two axle holes; all nicely fitting into the LEGO grid.
The top side is nicely smooth, while the bottom is mostly hollow with some added reinforcements.
LEGO Technic Link 1 x 8 (part 5996)
For the steering, a new size pushrod has been introduced, appearing 8 times in each set in black (6506200 | 5996).
Technic Link 1 x 8 is the longer version of the old 1 x 6. Aside from the difference in length, the new version also features curves bulging in the middle, probably adding more strength to the part.
Beam 2L with Towball (part 5995) & Beam 2L with Towball Socket (5997)
Essential for construction steering mechanisms is the family of towballs, and for these sets it has been expanded with 2 new molds featuring a towball and sockets mounted on a 2L-beam with an axle and pin hole. Beam 2L with Towball appears 4 times in each set in light bluish gray (6506199 | 5995), and Beam 2L with Towball Socket comes 4 times in each in black (6506201 | 5997).
The family of LEGO Technic elements that have towballs is extensive, coming in multiple shapes and sizes, some of which can be seen above. As far as I can find, part 5997 is the smallest to have a socket. Meanwhile, part 5995 spans the gap between towballs mounted on pins or axles and towballs mounted on larger steering arms.
It’s great to have these compact versions added to the family! There's a small disappointment for Constraction fans however: the connection is frictionless, making them less useful for LEGO® BIONICLE® builds which usually require stiff connections.
Recolors
We’re now entering the section where all new elements are unique to one of the two sets, so I will separate each section by set.

Recolors in 42207 Ferrari SF-24 F1 Car
Compared to the Red Bull car, the Ferrari is very sparse on recolors, with just a single part appearing in a new color:
- 1x Rotor Blade 3 x 19 with 3 Holes in Red (6540726 | 65422)
Decorated elements
Both cars come with the same tires, with the same print in different colors. The tires are seemingly identical in size and shape to the plain ones used in 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance, but those have the part number 4410 molded on the inside, while these printed ones feature the number 5746 on the inside. Unfortunately, I don’t have the 42171, so I can’t do a direct side-by-side comparison to confirm they are identical, so have to rely on photos found online.
Note that both cars come with 4 identical wheels, while F1 cars feature two sizes; the wheels in the back are wider than the ones in the front. This happens quite often in LEGO sets, and Zach also pointed this out in his review of LEGO® Icons 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna. While LEGO Icons has fixed this issue for the upcoming 10353 Williams Racing FW14B & Nigel Mansell also released on 1 March (stay tuned for our upcoming review), LEGO Technic didn't get the memo.
- 4x Tyre 81.6 x 44 Slick with Red print in Black (6522736), found in 42206
- 4x Tyre 81.6 x 44 Slick with Yellow print in Black (6522743), found in 42207
The only other printed element is the wheel cover for the Ferrari:
- 4x Wheel Cover for Wheel 34 x 56 with print in Black (6541099)
Stickers in 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20
Stickers in 42207 Ferrari SF-24
Other elements of interest
Aside from the new elements, there are others worth mentioning.
The Red Bull car comes with a great selection of Dark Blue elements. The following have appeared in 3 sets or less prior to the release of this set:
- 6 x Technic Beam 1 x 9 Thick in Dark Blue (6434420 | 64289)
- 4 x Technic Panel Curved 11 x 3 with 2 Pin Holes through Panel Surface in Dark Blue (6411452 | 62531)
- 5 x Technic Panel 3 x 11 x 1 in Dark Blue (6151062 | 15458)
- 9 x Technic Panel 3 x 7 x 1 in Dark Blue (6434565 | 71709)
- 2 x Technic Panel Curved 7 x 3 with 2 Pin Holes through Panel Surface in Dark Blue (6434559 | 24119)
- 8 x Technic Panel Fairing 2 x 3 x 1 in Dark Blue (6434563 | 71682)

- 2 x Technic Panel Fairing 2 x 1 x 1 in Dark Blue (6434570 | 89679)
Where the Ferrari has printed wheel covers, the Red Bull car features the plain version, which has appeared in 2 sets prior. The same goes for the other elements in the photo above.
- 4 x Wheel Cover for Wheel 34 x 56 in Black (6452871 | 4472)
- 6 x Technic Rotor Blade Small with Hole and Axle Connector End in Black (6442361 | 58489)
- 6 x Technic Panel Fairing 2 x 1 x 1 in Yellow (6431480 | 89679)
It won’t surprise that the Ferrari features a lot of elements in Red, including these which have appeared in 3 sets or less:
- 1 x Technic Panel Curved 3 x 13 x 2 Tapered, Right in Red (6528824,6559771 | 7225)
- 1 x 68196 Technic Panel Curved 5 x 13 x 2 Tapered, Right in Red (6472656,6334500 | 68196)

- 1x Technic Panel Curved 5 x 7 Parallelogram Left in Red (6362552 | 80267)
- 1 x Technic Panel Fairing #8 3L Very Small Smooth, Side B in Red (6513871,6408166 | 2389)4 x Technic Panel 3 x 7 x 1 in Red (6379345 | 71709)
- 1 x Technic Panel Fairing #7 3L Very Small Smooth, Side A in Red (6408165,6510988 | 2387)
- 1 x Technic Panel Curved 5 x 7 Parallelogram Right in Red (6362553 | 80268)
Conclusion
Sets 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Car and 42207 Ferrari SF-24 F1 Car bring a large amount of new elements for LEGO Technic builders. The new engine parts are long overdue, and although they are a bit too similar to the old versions, they are welcome nonetheless. The wishbone, Technic link and towballs will provide new options for steering mechanisms, and new panels are always welcome to allow for more detailing on the bodywork.
The sets differ massively in the quantity of recolors: where Red Bull gives us 40 parts split over 12 unique elements, the Ferrari only brings a single part. This is to be expected though: red cars are much more common in the LEGO Technic lineup compared to dark blue, so there is a higher chance a mold already exists in red.
I’m a bit worried that, aside from the panels, all new molds are shared equally between the cars, making me wonder how different the builds will be. The only way to figure that out is by building the models, so stay tuned for a side-by-side build in my next blog post for these sets.

Very nice overview of some very interesting new parts!
ReplyDeleteThe update to the pin connector block is surprising and interesting. I don't know if it'll fully be replacing the old studded version though—the Arc Dragon of Focus from the Ninjago theme, releasing the same month, uses the old version, so it's possible that the old version will be sticking around in System sets where the studs and anti-studs are more useful.
The new compact towball parts are also interesting. The ball cup may be loose but the version with the towball should still work well with Mixel joints for a firmer connection.
