Review: 43272 Heihei from LEGO® Disney™

Posted by Elspeth De Montes

One of the most colourful sets released earlier this month is LEGO® Disney 43272 Heihei, a brick-built version of the idiotic rooster from the Moana movies.

lots of lego elements in a gradient of rainbow colours

There's a new mould, a few recolours and a pile of rarer colours in this set, so well worth a closer look.

New mould

Brick Curved 1 x 1 (7126)

We are classing this January piece as a new mould as Heihei is the first set we have reviewed containing this new 1x1 curved brick element. Only one comes in this set, but it has appeared in two other colours within three more sets this year.

  • 1 x Brick Curved 1 x 1 in Bright Yellow/ Yellow (6532053 | 7126)

three lego elements comparing heights

The element is 1 module wide and 3 plates high.

five lego elements with the same curve shape

It joins the relatively new family of 3 plate-high curved slopes. Shown from left to right we have:

  • Slope, Curved 2 x 2 Corner Round with Recessed Stud (5846)
  • Slope, Curved 2 x 1 with Recessed Stud (5841)
  • Slope, Curved 1 x 2 (7134)
  • Slope, Curved 1 x 2 with Bottom Stud Holder (37352)
  • Slope, Curved 1 x 1 (7126)

We first noticed these newer curved slopes replacing the previous 4 plate-high curved slopes last year in sets like 10344 Lucky Bamboo which had Slope, Curved 2 x 1 with Recessed Stud (5841) or 71490 Izzie and Bunchurro the Gaming Bunny which had  Slope, Curved 2 x 2 Corner Round with Recessed Stud (5846).

two tablescraps showing matching curved elements

There are two more elements that match the curve but not the height of the new mould. On the left we have Slope, Curved 1 x 1 x 1 1/3 Corner Round (1871) and on the right, Tile, Round 1 x 1 Quarter (25269).

a curved corner in grey with a headlight print

The curved corner slope is interesting as it is also a relatively new element but it is 4 plates high rather than 3. We wondered why the element designers chose to retain the height with this element but then introduce the 3 plates high elements next? Perhaps it relates to its first use in 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5, where it required a large print surface?

a new curved brick shown under three different arched bricks

The 1x1 curved brick fits neatly under Arch 1 x 3 x 2 Curved Top (92903, 6005), Arch 1 x 4 x 2 (6182) and Arch 1 x 4 (3659) – with adjustments made for the arches' differing heights.

Of course the other updated Arch 1 x 3 x 1 2/3 Curved Top (5843) is a perfect fit, as it is essentially 6005 with a plate removed from the base.

There's another element that has the same curve but inverted, which may be a useful combination to complete the curve. Slope Curved 2 x 2 Inverted with 1 x 2 Cutouts (1750) is shown here in Orange connected to the new mould in yellow.

New print

There are no stickers in this set and just one new printed element.

Recolour

This is a wonderful set for rounded plates, one of the most exciting additions to the LEGO inventory in recent years.

13 lego rounded plates in a mix of colours
  • 4x Plate Special 1 x 3 Rounded with 3 Open Studs in Blue (6537694 | 77850)
  • 6x Plate Special 1 x 3 Rounded with 3 Open Studs in Orange (6523864 | 77850)
  • 3x Plate Special 1 x 2 Rounded with 2 Open Studs in Bright Green (6536987 | 35480)

Rare elements

For a relatively small set of 566 pieces, there's a pile of rare elements that have only appeared in one or at most two sets at the time of writing. This is good news for availability on Pick a Brick of course but also on the secondary marketplaces where sellers buy and split sets for resale.

In one other set:

a mix of 18 lego elements in multiple colours
  • 2 x Slope Curved 2 x 2 x 2/3 Inverted in Reddish Orange (6529630 | 32803)
  • 2 x Bracket 1 x 1 - 1 x 2 in Yellow(6451747 | 79389)
  • 2 x Plate Special 1 x 2 Rounded with 2 Open Studs in Reddish Orange (6527033 | 35480)
  • 2 x 15535 Tile Round 2 x 2 with Hole in Bright Bluish Green/ Dark Turquoise (6491435 | 15535)

  • 1 x Slope Curved 2 x 2 with Stud Notch Right in Red (6477758 | 5093)

The build

Heiehei

a partly build model of the body of a rooster

The build starts with Heihei's body.  There are attachments for his wings, tail feathers, neck and legs – all neatly combined into a colourful body.

partly built lego rooster legs

The legs are nice and stable to support the weight of the rest of the model.  The newly recoloured  1 x 3 rounded plates in orange are utilised in his feet.

a colourful build of a rooster neck

There was something very pleasing about building the neck with its gradient of colours from red to yellow.

a page from lego instruction book showing colours

A little care is needed with the orange and reddish orange elements in particular,  but the instructions have a useful page to help distinguish the various colours. Seems like Heihei is easily mixed up too.

a part built lego rooster head showing a pink stud as the brain

Fans of Moana will know that Heihei is a ridiculously stupid rooster and I really loved the fact that his head is transparent, apart from a pink 1x1 stud as a brain in the build!

leho heihei the roosters head

The head is well shaped, accurately depicting Heihei's head with oversized eyes and straggly wattle.

a part built lego rooster with two detached wings

The wings are connected with LEGO® Mixels joints into axle 1L with tow ball, which allows them to move, but it would have been even better if these elements could have been a more appropriate colour as it means there is some light bluish grey on display.

three lego rooster tail feathers lined up

The final step to complete Heihei is to add his tail feathers. LEGO Heihei has a few less tail feathers than in the movie version,  but they still look the part.

Base

a rounded square base made out of lego

The base is a rounded square. Spot the 36x 1x1 curved bricks in nougat (6403047 | 49307) as the decorative edging around the bottom.

a lego base in the shape of a rounded square with foliage on top

Add some foliage, flowers and the new printed nameplate and voilà, the base is complete. The colours used here are nicely in tune with the other LEGO Moana sets; great for collectors who may want to display them all at once.

Conclusion

a colourful lego rooster model standing on a base

I'll be honest; I love this set a lot! It has a bit of everything; stunning colours, a pile of rare parts and a fun build that made me smile! I'm torn between keeping it built and taking it apart to use the colourful new elements.

It's a model that looks good from all angles, even a butt shot!

I have seen the Moana films quite a few times now, so there may be a bit of bias here from me, but even as a parts pack the set packs a lot in.  Objectively it has a price per part of 6.2p/7.1c/7.1c which is great value for so many rare, useful elements.

  1. We indeed owe the height of the curved corner to the Aston Martin, I'm pretty sure I read that in an article.. on this very website lol

  2. I bought HeiHei day one, and after finishing the build immediately told my wife I'd be getting a second copy for the parts alone. This set ticked every box for me.

    1. Ticked all my boxes too - I was very pleased with this set build, final appearance, parts just a great set!

  3. It's baffling that sets like this aren't more prominent. This is what happens when TLG remembers that they are a construction toy first and an IP slave last, or at least a distant second.
