Product description
Buildable Mario figure with a posable head and arms, sitting behind the wheel of the most iconic Mario Kart vehicle of all. Place the Standard Kart on the special stand, which allows you to show it at dynamic angles as if it is being driven at speed or drifting in a Mario Kart race.
New moulds
At first glance, more than one of the team thought that the image that leaked was fake! That is in part a testament to the extraordinary shaping achieved on the model and its large size, but also the relatively stud-free surfaces and the new specialised elements.
Most noticeable is Mario's great big moustache, which looks to be a single piece – a modified 2x6 plate that falls into the same family as pieces like the 3x5 cloud plate (35470). It's hard to tell from the pictures but perhaps sections along the side facing the mouth are thinner than a plate, perhaps similar to the 2x3 cloud plate (5518)?
This overlay shows where studs sitting below would fall, perhaps explaining why some edges have been made thinner than others. It will be fascinating to get a hold of this and see if and how all those curves fit into the LEGO® System!
Any ideas of what else it could be used for?
You can't miss Mario's great big schnozz either.
Seen from the front of Mario, which is looking downward at the top of the piece, the top of the nose element is an oval-shaped dome 3 modules wide and perhaps about 2.5 modules deep. By examining at various pictures including the blurry one above, we've ascertained that the piece is a brick, tapering inward to what is probably a 2x2 round base. However, the base has a 1x2 cutout, to create a stepped element. It's disappointing for aesthetic reasons that it has this cutout – presumably for strength, so Mario doesn't lose his nose so easily. A flat base with an axle hole connector would have made the part more universally useful, but would have required the moustache piece to have a hole to accommodate the axle.
Also front and centre is a new round tile measuring 6x6. Unfortunately in terms of re-use, it is printed with the red "M" but hopefully we will see this beast crop up unprinted in other sets in the future.

Great overview!
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited for this set. It's amazing how good the likeness is with only a pair of specialized parts as finishing touches. The moustache is a wonderfully quirky part and giving it studs feels like an invitation to use it in other MOCs!
Speaking of MOCs, I feel like this set is really well-suited to MOCs. A simple mod would be rebuilding one of his hands to be in an opened position, and building a scaled banana/Koopa shell/Bob-omb for him to throw. For more involved MOCs it'd be awesome to build alternate karts/bikes for him to ride.
I'm curious to see how this scales next to the Mighty Bowser set from a couple years ago. If the scale is decent these two should look great together! And I'd love to see other characters in this scale (a Luigi could even reuse the nose piece introduced here with a differently shaped moustache).
Really fascinating to see the super specialized parts being created for this. Nintendo must've not gone for any brick build solution to the nose or mustache.
