New and rare elements

40761 Sméagol and Déagol contains 2 new elements in the form of new printed heads for the set's eponymous minifigures.

  • 1x Head with Print, Sméagol happy/evil faces expressions
  • 1x Head with print, Déagol surprised/holding breath expressions

The rest of the figures are made up of a generous number of rare parts.
  • 1 x Hair Long Wavy/Curly in Dark Brown (6491130 | 2632) in 76440 Triwizard Tournament: The Arrival
  • 1 x  Torso, Jacket, Dark Brown Vest, Sand Blue Scarf, Dark Tan Belt print, Reddish Brown Arms, Light Nougat Hands in Reddish Brown (6401304 | 76382) in 2 sets
  • 1 x Torso Jacket, Tan Shirt, Reddish Brown Suspenders, Dark Brown Pants print, Dark Tan Arms, Light Nougat Hands in Sand Yellow/ Dark Tan (6435308 | 76382) in 2 sets
  • 2 x Legs Short with Light Nougat Feet Pattern [Multi Color Injection] in Dark Brown (6417974 | 37679)

I'm very pleased with these figures. As a Tolkien fan, I'm happy to have a LEGO version of these pivotal (but perhaps slightly lesser-known) characters from The Lord of The Rings. They are certainly a pair of characters I never expected to appear in minifigure form.

2 closeup shots from gwp 40761: evil smeagol face holding the one ring, and deagol minifig holding breath while swimming underwater

The face designs suit the characters well; Sméagol's alternate face print looks particularly menacing and the unique expression on Déagol's face will be useful for your own minifigures.

Déagol's torso was previously used in the Sam Gamgee figure from 10316 Rivendell and 10333 Barad-dûr.  It might have been nice to receive a unique torso for Déagol or at least one that doesn't already appear in LEGO® The Lord of the Rings sets, but it works well enough for a GwP. Sméagol's torso is taken from the LEGO® Harry Potter theme (specifically the Argus Filch figure) and does not look out of place at all.

The set includes just one rare element:

one lego piece
  • 1x Plate Round Corner 4 x 4 in Dark Orange (6489202 | 30565) in 2 sets

The build

The build is split between three bags. The first contains a selection of elements in dark greens and blues to create the riverbed.

The second uses some brighter tones to represent the surface of the water and build up the river bank.

Finally, from the third bag is built a boat and tree to finish the scene.

While a very simple build, the model does a great job of recreating this pivotal scene from the opening scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, particularly with the Déagol figure placed under the waters of the Gladden River, pulled along by a fish...

Lego Sméagol minifig with menacing expression steals the one ring from Déagol minifig who lies face down having been strangled

... only to be betrayed by Sméagol, who immediately takes The One Ring for himself, beginning his gradual transformation into the hideous creature Gollum.

Closing thoughts

What a – um, fun Gift with Purchase! If you're a big Tolkien fan, you won't want to miss your chance to get your hands on 2 exclusive figures who are very important characters from the books and films. I noted in my review of 10354 The Shire that it might not offer the best value for money, but picking up this free gift along with your purchase certainly sweetens the deal.
