Review: 76970 Baby Dinosaur Dolores Aquilops from LEGO® Jurassic World™ Rebirth

Posted by Kev Levell

For me, a highlight of LEGO® sets over the last few years has been some of the brick-built creatures that would have been unthinkable in the past. As part of their LEGO® Creator 3-in-1 line, they have now made all manner of brick beasts; crocodiles, giraffes, pandas and more have all been depicted in impressive style.

The recent range of baby dinosaurs have naturally found favour with my kids, and myself. The newest addition to this group, LEGO® Jurassic World™ Rebirth 76970 Baby Dinosaur Dolores Aquilops looks super-cute in all the official imagery so far released, so let's take a look at what goes into making her.

The build

My son animated a speed-build of the set!

The process of building Dolores is a fairly standard affair; what once seemed like inventive sideways-building in constructions like this now seems commonplace, and that's entirely to be expected because it has proven effective in the past, and good results can clearly be seen here too.

Whether this is an accurate representation of the dinosaur character from the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth film is yet to be seen, but I think that's broadly irrelevant, as this undoubtedly has the intended look of a ceratopsian dinosaur.

It is nicely articulated and can be posed in a number of ways. Those slightly oversized back feet help to keep Dolores balanced in begging poses.

Conclusion

3 lego brick built baby dinos

Last year, my son and I very much enjoyed reviewing the LEGO Jurassic World Chaos Theory sets; by far my favourite from those was 76962 Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus (above centre; also see my review of set 76962). It was good value too, with nice selection of parts. The baby dinosaur concept returned in January with 76967 Little Eatie (above right), the adorable tiny T. rex. It has to be noted that Baby Dolores has definitely equalled those forerunners in terms of cuteness. They all make an appealing trio.

I am pleased to see this cute range of baby dinosaurs is continuing in the product range and hope this is not the end of the idea.  Should the creative teams at Universal Pictures and LEGO need any encouragement: a green baby steggy would round out this collection quite nicely, followed perhaps by some kind of sauropod in lilac maybe? I simply mean: keep 'em coming!

Dolores is a straightforward build, but no less fun for that fact. A nice batch of the new dome pieces in a solid colour and healthy number of recoloured and rare parts make this a solid little set. Price point at US$27.99/ £19.99/ 24.99€/ AU$34.99 is spot on too, in my opinion. Palaeontologist, parent, pupil or punter; I’m comfortable in highly recommending this set for all.

  1. Minor correction, you seem to have spelled Dolores' (not Delores) name wrong throughout.

The recolor of the new dome piece is much appreciated—recently it's been spotted in red in the new Fortnite mech set as well, so it's nice to start getting it in some useful common colors.
